Physician Competency in the Use of Choice...

Physician Competency in the Use of Choice Architecture

Overview

Choice architecture, or the design of environments in which people make decisions, may play a critical role in how physicians engage with patients and their surrogate decision makers. Physicians may lack expertise or awareness of choice architecture, which can lead to the use of suboptimal environments for patients or surrogates to make decisions. The overall objective of this project is to obtain preliminary data revealing whether physicians demonstrate skill in the use of choice architecture. This University of Pennsylvania Health System-based study will help to determine the extent to which physicians predict the influence of choice frames presented to patients or surrogates making health care decisions, particularly older adults who are highly likely to confront preference-sensitive health decisions.
