*Mentorship of a PAIR faculty member
*Guidance on study design, implementation, and analysis plans
*Study oversight and monitoring
*Manuscript development support
*Research staff support (project managers, data managers, analysts, and research coordinators)
*Study-related expenses
Dr. Pedro Gonzalez-Alegre is a neurologist who directs the Huntington's Disease (HD) Center of Excellence and co-directs the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center. The uptake of palliative and end-of-life care among HD patients lags far behind patients with other serious illnesses, despite considerable impairments in function associated with this relentless and progressive disease. This study aims to qualitatively assess the views and attitudes of HD patients and their families toward palliative care and to quantitatively assess to role of race and socioeconomic background on the diagnosis of HD and care received, including end of life care.
Dr. Niharika Ganta is the Medical Director of the Penn Home Palliative Care (PHPC) program and a board certified physician in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine subspecialties. The PHPC program provides home palliative care services to home bound patients with serious illnesses, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine visits have been used to address symptom needs, provide psychosocial support, advanced care planning, and ongoing education regarding medical condition and trajectory. This timely study aims to assess whether these comprehensive telemedicine services and specialized support reduce hospital readmissions and improves the quality of life of ESRD patients on dialysis.
Dr. Chris Jones, a palliative care physician, aimed to improve the quality and frequency of advance care planning among patients admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, leveraging the Our Care Wishes online platform, a low-cost, scalable tool built and tested by PAIR faculty in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team at Penn’s Center for Health Care Innovation
