Biography

Dr. Mark Mikkelsen conducts patient-oriented research focused on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and long-term outcomes in survivors of critical illness. He is passionate in his goal to improve the delivery of care to critically ill patients and to improve the lives of survivors of critical illness by understanding how critical illness impacts one's life and one's health trajectory.

 

Dr. Mikkelsen is the Chief of the Section of Medical Critical Care at Penn. He serves as Co-Chair of the UPHS Critical Care Committee and Medical Director of the Penn Presbyterian Medical Intensive Care Unit. Through these efforts, he supports the growth and development of a phenomenal group of multidisciplinary Penn providers who are collectively driven to educate the next generation of critical care clinicians, to deliver care of the highest quality to the critically ill, and to create and implement innovative science that advances the field of critical care medicine.

 

Dr. Mikkelsen serves as Co-Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Thrive: Supporting Survivors of Critical Illness Initiative, Chair of the SCCM Internal Medicine Section, Co-Chair of the 2018 SCCM Congress in San Antonio, Texas, and as a member of the American Thoracic Society's Quality Improvement and Implementation Committee. Dr. Mikkelsen lives with his wife and 3 sons in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. When away from work, he and his family can often be found outside playing whiffle ball, basketball, soccer, or football.
