Dr. Kelly Vranas is a pulmonary/critical care physician and critical care health services researcher focused on improving the quality, experience, and value of care delivered to critically ill patients through the study, design, and implementation of innovative care delivery processes. She is a member of the American Thoracic Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and an affiliate faculty member of the PAIR Center. 

After graduating from Santa Clara University, Dr. Vranas completed medical school at Cornell University, followed by residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She then pursued pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Stanford University, where she spent a year as a research fellow at the Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC). CERC is the first university-based research center exclusively dedicated to discovering, testing, and evaluating cost-saving innovations while simultaneously improving the quality of care.  After completing her fellowship at CERC, Dr. Vranas joined Oregon Health & Science University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, where she was awarded an NHLBI-funded K12 award in Emergency Care Research and completed a Master's Degree in Clinical Research. Most recently, Dr. Vranas has been awarded a VA HSR&D career development award aimed at understanding organizational features and care processes that lead to more efficient, high-value care for hospitalized Veterans using a mixed methods approach. Additionally, current projects include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on frontline clinicians, and strategies to improve quality of care for seriously ill patients at the end of life. 

Dr. Vranas provides inpatient critical care services at medical intensive care units at Oregon Health & Science University and the Portland VA Medical Center. She also sees patients in the outpatient pulmonary clinic at the Portland VA Medical Center. She lives in the Portland area with her husband and two young children. Together with her family, she enjoys hiking, international travel, wine country, mystery novels, and the Oregon Ducks.
